Prinses on… Man, music & misunderstandings

Following is just one of my underconstructionist theories, based on mainly observation, personal frame of reference and a lot of assumption:

This weekend is Oppikoppi-time again!! The excitement is absolutely uncontainable. Every year around this time, thousands of masochists dare to spend a weekend of mayhem in a cesspool of killer music, beer, dirt, dirt, music, beer, drugs and, as they say on their website, “anything faintly resembling short term memory loss”. It is truly an unforgettable experience, of which you can remember nothing…

This festival creates a sense of unity amongst festival-goers. People sharing such a sense of unity can be seen as an “imagined community”, a term coined by Benedict Anderson. It is ‘imagined’ because the members do not all know each other and it is a ‘community’ because each member has a shared image of communion in their minds. Basically then, if you went to Oppikoppi, and I went to Oppikoppi, we are brothers, born from the same earth, joined together in front of the main stage to hold each other, share a joint and worry not what our ancestors’ quarrels were… Bliss.

So, in the light of the upcoming party, I started thinking again about what it is that makes this festival so damn awesome and care-free, where no one has a problem with another fellow-human, compared to a regular Thursday night in Hatfield, Pretoria where you encounter all the same people anyway, only here everyone wants to moer each other…

I drew up this table:

hatfieldvskoppi

No major differences right?? Nooooo! I believe there is one teeny difference creating massive divergence. Look closely:

Do you see what I’m getting at here??

Now, I only need some medical proof that there is something connecting your ears, brain, alcohol intake and tolerance levels and my theory will be valid…

[Note: for the difference between kak music and rock music, use your logic. If this doesn’t work, go check out the Oppikoppi line-up here, everything that’s not there, is kak.]
